Race to Witch Mountain is a re-imagining of the 1975 feature film Escape to Witch Mountain. Both versions of the film are based on the 1968 novel Escape to Witch Mountain by Alexander Key. The feature film is directed by Andy Fickman and stars Dwayne Johnson, AnnaSophia Robb, Alexander Ludwig, Ciarán Hinds and Carla Gugino.
Jack Bruno (Dwayne Johnson) is a taxi driver in Las Vegas. One of his passengers is Dr. Alex Friedman (Carla Gugino), an unsuccessful scientist who is giving speeches about legitimate scientific theories of UFOs and outer cosmos.
The next day, Bruno finds two children, Sara (AnnaSophia Robb) and Seth (Alexander Ludwig) sitting in the back seat of his cab. They tell him they need to go to a particular destination and are ready to pay all they have ($15,000, which they took from an ATM) to get there. They guide him to a house in the center of nowhere. Meanwhile, Major Henry Burke (Ciarán Hinds) is searching for information on the two aliens that landed some days earlier. When they arrive at the house, Bruno follows them out of anxiety and curiosity. There, the children fulfill their aim, an equipment contained within alien vegetation.
When leaving, they are attacked by a "Siphon" (Tom Woodruff, Jr.), a creature built to kill a particular target. The Siphon chases them, until its alien ship crashes into a train, the train is damaged by an blast in the railroad subway, and the being is hurt. The group ultimately find themselves in a small city. The children explain to Bruno that they are aliens from a far planet, who are sent to Earth by their parents because the government of their fading planet intends to harm and invade Earth so that their breed may live on there. They also explain that the entity they obtained at the house contains the outcome of an experiment which their parents set up. The investigation from this test will rescue their planet without having to attack and invade Earth. However their planet's military favor the idea of invading Earth and sent the Siphon murderer to stop them. They are next pursued by government agencies trying to get back the children for tests.
They are joined by Dr. Friedman at the UFO Expo. With help of one of Dr. Friedman's friends, the kids find out that their crashed alien craft has been relocated to a government station at Witch Mountain. They arrive at Witch Mountain. There, the children are captured, along with Bruno and Friedman. The government agents began running tests to try to find out the mystery of their powers in attempt to exploit them. Burke then conspire to murder them and do terrible things to them. But, the two humans flee and come to rescue the children in nick of time. The Siphon causes a distraction by attacking the center, allowing the humans to free the kids and reach their ship. They launch the craft, flee through the mountain's tunnels and kill the Siphon who boarded the vessel. Once safe, the kids drop the humans off, and give Bruno and Dr. Friedman a tool that will let the kids to always find them. As for Burke, whose base is now in ruins, he is left getting questions from Washington. The movie ends with the alien ship taking off and returning to their planet.
During the end credits, Bruno and Dr. Friedman (now a couple) are speaking at a UFO convention about their new successful book called "Race to Witch Mountain". As they are about to go, the device the children gave Bruno activates, indicating that they may be returning.
